From the University of IL Extension site: Poinsettias are part of the Euphorbiaceae or Spurge family. The showy colored parts of poinsettias that most people think of as the flowers are actually colored bracts (modified leaves).
Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first US Ambassador to Mexico, introduced the poinsettia plant to the United States from Mexico. December 12th is Poinsettia Day, which marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851.

About Gina Harrison
Gina Harrison is a NC artist, graphic designer, musician, and arts ed advocate. She received her BFA in studio art, with an emphasis in printmaking, from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her recent work has been exhibited in Pittsboro, Durham, Cary, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Wilmington, NC. She served as president of the Chatham Artists Guild and is a past president of the Chatham Arts Council. She recently completed two terms as a board member of Arts NC, the statewide advocacy organization for the arts.
